esterday a wizard entered New York with a case. A case full of magical creatures and unfortunately, some have escaped”.
Harry Potter´s magic world returns to big screen in November 18th!. Wizards, witches and fantastic creatures come back to unleash muggles´imagination (“muggles”, you see, those of us who are not wizards nor witches) but, in this occasion, it´s not Harry Potter but Newt Scamander the one in charge of taking us to the Wizarding World…
Who is Newt Scamander?. If you don´t know him yet, he´s the “author” of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, a book highly recommended in Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry which consists of a Magizoology treatise similar to muggles´science books but… in a “bestial” way!.
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM: FIRST OF ALL, IN THE BOOK
A lot of muggles remember Magizoologist Newt Scamander´s work because they had the chance of reading the book a few years ago. It was a pocket-size red volume (today reprinted with Hogwarts´s coat of arms) where Newt Scamander was introduced to us as an employee of the Ministry of Magic because of his deep knowledge of fantastic creatures. After his introduction, readers could enjoy a detailed magic bestiary from “A” to “Z”.
In this guide, muggles find creatures wandering around our folklore (beasts that haven´t been “erased” from our minds by some sort of enchantment) like Centaurs, Dragons, Hippogriffs or Unicorns but, most of all, we discover fantastic animals we know nothing of the sort (except some cases by references in Harry Potter´s books) like Acromantulas, Chizpurfles and its habits of gnawing wands or Demiguises whose pelts are ideal for invisibility cloaks.
This is an essential guide in order to study witchcraft where you can learn another matters like the difference between the concepts of “beast” and “being” (which are changing over time creating discussion in the Wizarding World), as well as the measures taken by the Ministry of Magic so that muggles can´t see these creatures (although it seems that famous “Nessie” from Loch Ness is laughing at everyone!).
The edition we enjoyed was an extraordinary one because it counted on a prologue by Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts, and it was a copy of the volume that belonged to Harry Potter which kept the small asides written by his friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger.
FANTASTIC BEASTS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM: IN A FEW DAYS ON THE BIG SCREEN
And now, in 2016, Warner Bros brings us the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” movie where we´ll meet, at last, Newt Scamander and “his” magical creatures. There have been some trailers (some of them were released during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games) and the movie promises adventures, mystery and witchcraft in the New York of the 1920´s.
I personally love that, in this occasion, the magical universe is set in the 1920´s because it puts a touch of glamour to the story.
I´ve to confess I´ve only watched two trailers because I don´t like spoilers but, considering what I´ve seen and some information I´ve looked for, I can tell you something of what we´ll see on the big screen:
*Newt Scamander (played by Eddie Redmayne) was a student at Hogwarts, like Harry Potter, but was expelled because of a matter concerning the magical creatures. In spite of his expulsion, he´ll be under Dumbledore´s protection.
*Scamander travels to New York with a case full of magical creatures (you have to see how he succeeded at passport control… an amazing experience for us, the muggles, who always have trouble with metal objects at the airport).
*The MacGuffin of this story is the case. “MacGuffin” is a concept created by movie director Alfred Hitchcock which means the motive or excuse that generates the plot and, in this case, I say it´s the case because the magical creatures kept inside it will escape spreading chaos in New York (I wonder if King Kong could have been one of the evaders magical creatures of Scamander´s case…).
*The Magical Community will have to deal with this “bestial” crisis (Which “official” explanations will they give to muggles? or, maybe, will they use a memory charm “obliviate” to erase these memories from them?).
*Meanwhile, as terror spreads across the streets, there may be someone interested in taking chance of chaos (“It´s good fishing in troubled waters”). As you can see, the eternal war between Good and Evil is taking place again and, in this occasion, the key to solve the conflict will be young Newt Scamander.
With this information the muggles are ready for our encounter with the fantastic beasts. There´re another trailers presenting some of these creatures and I´m sure next weeks will bring us more clues about the movie.
Don´t you think this Harry Potter prequel may set the bases of some events told in the novels of “the wizard boy with a scar on his forehead”?. I think there will be some connection between both stories…
This is a movie to have fun and let our dreams fly high and, needless to say that merchandising has played a very important role in order to awake our fantasy with all sort of goodies in the muggles´ stores like T-shirts with the logo of Hogwarts, wands with special effects, the reprint of Newt Scamander´s book…
Coming to some details of the movie, it will be interesting to see Eddie Redmayne starring Newt Scamander, a role different from the last ones he has played (“The Theory of Everything”, “The Danish Girl”).
Speaking of the director, it´s David Yates, who directed the last four movies of the Harry Potter saga so, don´t worry, this muggle is well trained at these magical matters. And, what about the music?. Well, there´s another “Newt” in charge of the soundtrack: James “Newton” Howard, the responsible of the music scores of “ I´m Legend”, “Snow White and the Huntsman” and “Maleficent”.
THE DARK SIDE OF NEWT SCAMANDER…J.K ROWLING
Don´t get me wrong because when I speak about “the dark side” I mean the person who is “behind” Newt Scamander: J.K Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter. It would be unthinkable to finish this review without mentioning the person who gave birth to this magical world.
I don´t know if the plot of this movie was in J.K Rowling ´s mind when she wrote “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” some years ago but, in any case, what really matters is the fact of being an original script of her own, taking the Magizoology book as the starting point and becoming her first script for the big screen.
And she must have enjoyed the experience of scripting because, some days ago, Rowling announced there wouldn´t be a trilogy but a PENTALOGY!.
Five movies: the first one on the big screen this November and the scripts of the remaining four are already written. Bravo J.K Rowling!
DRAGONS ARE IN SOLIDARITY WITH MUGGLES
Maybe you don´t know but when J.K Rowling published “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and “Quidditch Through the Ages” she donated the two guides´ earnings to “Comic Relief”, a charity founded by english comedians to help children of poor countries. It´s wonderful to witness how “Magic” travels from Hogwarts to the farthest places…
During an interview with “Comic Relief” J.K Rowling said that her favourite fantastic beast was the Phoenix because of its beauty and valuable qualities (I´m sure Dumbledore agrees with her). I like Unicorns and I think Dragons are fascinating (like Swedish short-snout or Antipodean Opaleye) but I´m sure my list of favourite fantastic beasts will get bigger after watching the movie.
This is a Magical Autumn, there´s no doubt, and the starting point has been “Harry Potter and the cursed child”, the stage play whose script has been published first in U.K (in Spain it was published on September 28th) so that people who couldn´t attend the West End to see the stage play could have the chance of knowing what happened to Harry Potter when he became an adult. And now, we have eleven days left to meet Newt Scamander´s fantastic beasts (if you want to see an oil portrait of Newt Scamander, click Newt Scamander margaindesign). So, I´m going to remember some of the basic charms that students learn at Hogwarts.
Here you have:
* “Alohomora”: used to unlock doors.
* “Impedimenta”: used to stop an object or individual for a short period time.
* “Expelliarmus”: It´s a disarming charm.
* “Protego”: It´s a shield charm that creates a magical barrier to protect a person against some kind of spells during the attack.
And don´t forget the motto of Hogwarts: “Draco dormiens nunquam titillandus” (“Never tickle a Sleeping Dragon”).
I´LL SEE YOU SOON IN THE NEW YORK OF THE 20´s!
Here you have a link to one of the movie trailers and other to Pottermore, J.K Rowling´s english web where you can find all kind of information about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
